Hanscom base saved
Early last year, municipal and state officials had many concerns about whether Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford could be spared in the latest round of base closings.
This led to an ambitious effort to persuade Defense Department officials and nine members of a federal base closure commission that Hanscom is not only a huge economic engine for the region and the state but a key developer of electronic warfare systems.
The initiative won out in what was arguably the region's biggest news of the year: saving the base.
