Jack Wilson, the former president of the University of Massachusetts, is the new chairman of the Defense Technology Initiative, the initiative said.

The initiative, which refers to itself as DTI, works to make New England more competitive for defense firms, research universities and military installations.

Wilson will be joined on the DTI leadership team by Fred Strader, president and chief executive of Textron Systems Corp., and Lisa Aucoin, director of soldier solutions at BAE Systems in Hudson, N.H.

DTI’s parent organization is the Massachusetts High Technology Council, an advocacy for the local technology industry.
